Cinemuerte are an alternative rock band from Portugal formed in 2002. They have performed alongside bands such as HIM, My Chemical Romance, and Paradise Lost, and have appeared at major festivals including Super Bock Super Rock and Festival Vilar de Mouros.

Formed in 2002 in Lisbon by Sophia Vieira and João Vaz, in just a few short months, “Cinemuerte” participated in two tributes: to The Cure (Our Voices/Equinoxe Records – GERMANY – ‘Close to Me’) and to The Misfits (Portuguese Nightmare/Raging Planet Records – PORTUGAL – ‘Where Eagles Dare’)

In 2006, Cinemuerte released their first full-length album ‘Born from Ashes’ through the independent label Raging Planet. The album was produced by Armando Teixeira (Ik Mux, Boris Ex-Machina, Da Weasel, Bizarra Locomotiva). The debut single titled ‘Stuck in a Moment’ quickly gained notoriety, joining the playlist of the radio station Antena 3/Rádio e Televisão de Portugal and clearing the way for its successor—the single ‘Underwater’.

Between 2006 and 2007, they took to the main stages of the music scene: at Coliseu dos Recreios, they opened for HIM and My Chemical Romance. They were also part of the lineups for summer festivals: Festival Vilar de Mouros, Festirock, Cellos Rock, and Super Bock Super Rock—on May 25, 2006, Cinemuerte played to an audience of 20,000 people alongside Korn, Within Temptation, Moonspell, Ramp, and Bizarra Locomotiva.

In 2007, Cinemuerte appeared with a reinterpretation of ‘Chabala’, paying tribute to Mão Morta on the tribute album ‘E se depois’ released by Raging Planet.

In 2008, they released their second full-length album ‘Aurora Core’ in Portugal via Raging Planet, which includes the single ‘AIR’ and ‘The Night of Everyday’ with lyrics by Fernando Ribeiro (Moonspell). Guest musicians participated in this album: Pedro Cardoso on drums (FEVER) and Ricardo Amorim on guitar (Moonspell). The mixing and mastering of the record were handled by the legendary producer Waldemar Sorychta (Lacuna Coil, The Gathering, Moonspell, Tiamat, Samael).

In 2009, guitarists Tiago Menaia and Fred Gonçalves, and drummer Sérgio Lopo joined the band. That year, they recorded a version of Kim Wilde’s ‘Kids in America’ for the Metropolis 79/89 collection (Carbono Records, Raging Planet & Metropolis), a tribute to the 80s.

In February of that same year, they were invited to play at two launch parties in Portugal: the Twilight DVD Release Party and the World Guitar Hero Tour. Later, in February 2012, they returned by invitation for the sequel to the first film: the ‘Twilight- Breaking Dawn’ DVD Release Party.

In 2011, they released their 3rd album ‘Wild Grown’, mixed and mastered by Beau Burchell, the acclaimed Californian musician and producer (Saosin). “Wild Grown” is distributed worldwide by Sony Music Entertainment. 2012 marks the departure of guitarist Tiago Menaia.

Three years after the release of the album “Wild Grown”, 2014 marks the return of Cinemuerte with the release of the EP ‘DHIST’, through the Raging Planet label. The artwork was created by Swedish photographer Tommy Ingberg (Px3 Prix de La Photographie Paris). The first single ‘Dog’ debuted with a Black & White video directed by André Guiomar (winner at the NY Portuguese Film Festival 2012), inspired by the introspective nature of Cinemuerte’s latest work, ‘DHIST’. The band’s video was nominated in the best video category at the 12th Black & White – International Audiovisual Festival (Official Selection) – Portugal 2015.

The band returned to the road. In 2015, a highlight was the invitation to play at the ‘Uivo’ party to pay tribute to one of the most important radio figures of all time in Portugal—António Sérgio, best known for creating radio programs such as ‘Som da Frente’ and ‘A Hora do Lobo’. In 2015, Cinemuerte won the international Global Rockstar Contest sponsored by AKG, in the category of best artist of the month.

In April 2019, Cinemuerte returned with the release of their fourth album ‘O Refúgio’, through their own label, Core Artists. “Me, Myself and I” is the lead single.

In September 2019, they marked the debut of the second single “Until We Say Goodbye”. The accompanying music video was filmed entirely at the most important megalithic monument in the entire Iberian Peninsula—the Almendres Cromlech, located in the parish of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe in Évora.

In 2020, they returned to the stage, notably participating in the Doomed Fest 2020 festival in Viseu, alongside bands such as Gaerea, Soul of Anubis, Juseph, and Sollust. That same year, they released the third single “Silent Notes”, whose music video was filmed in the Arrábida Natural Park.

In 2023, the band announced the departure of their drummer. Cinemuerte are preparing their fifth album, with the release of the first single expected in 2024.
