By Paulo Jorge Bandeira Amado

I was born under the sun of Faro, Algarve, on July 10, 1965. For me, music was never something learned from books, but an instinct that awakened early. I remember, as a young child, finding a damaged accordion in the street—likely discarded in the trash. That broken object became my first gateway; as soon as I picked it up, it became clear to everyone around me that I possessed a gift that needed the freedom to grow.

Life took me from Portugal to Germany with my parents, and it was there that my musical identity truly took shape. In an autonomous and curious way, I began to explore the guitar and discover my voice. The distance from my roots was filled by musical notes, and what started as childhood play became a constant pursuit of self-improvement and expression.

My adolescence, between the ages of 15 and 17, was deeply marked by “Beatlemania.” Under the overwhelming influence of the boys from Liverpool, I dedicated myself to perfecting my technique. I joined a band based in Hamburg called The Little Teddys, where I took on the bass and vocals. We played in various cafes and bars, but the most symbolic moment was stepping onto the stage of the legendary Kaiserkeller—the very same club where the Beatles themselves once played. There, amidst the dim lights and the hum of guitars, I felt like I was part of history.

During my school years in Germany, music was the bond that connected me with my peers. There was a constant exchange of energy and chords; I would play and, so they said, enchant those who listened. This ease of producing sound from almost anything I could get my hands on was spontaneous—a natural extension of my body that followed me into adulthood, always keeping the classics of Elvis Presley and the Beatles alive in my repertoire.

In the 1980s, the pace of professional performances slowed down, but the music never went silent. It became the heart of gatherings with friends and family parties. In 1988, I got married and began a new chapter that brought three children into my life. I made it a point to involve them in melodies from the moment they were born, playing for them at every opportunity. Today, I am proud to see that the seed has sprouted: all three of them play the guitar, my own instrument of choice.

Songwriting was always a territory I trod upon with some shyness, keeping my creations to myself. However, in the late 90s, something changed. In just one single night, as if touched by an inspiring muse, I composed my debut single, “Eu Sei” (I Know). It was a sudden and honest explosion of creativity that marked the beginning of a new phase in my career and in my relationship with art.

Since that magical night, music has taken a central and non-negotiable role in my existence. It is no longer just a hobby or a talent of my youth; it is a fire burning inside me that refuses to go out. I continue to compose and play, driven by the same passion that led me to pick up that old accordion from the street, proving that music is not just what I do, but who I am.
