Império dos Sentados: The Mythical Portuguese Rock Band

Império dos Sendados was a Portuguese rock (later progressive rock) band started in 1994 by Rui Rodrigues (the vocalist) and Renato Ribeiro (the guitarist). Ballads such as “Longe de Ti”, “Sempre para te Amar” and “Só por Ti” were hits in Portugal.

At the height of the Portuguese music scene in the 90s, an emerging band disturbed and enchanted the restless souls of rock lovers: Império dos Sentados. With a powerful sound and lyrics that touched on themes as diverse as the melancholy of everyday life, the revolt against oppressive systems and complex human relationships, this fictional band became an icon of a generation that searched for its voice amidst society’s lament.

Rui Rodrigues was the lead singer of the Portuguese band Império dos Sendados, which was known for its style that mixes rock, pop and elements of traditional Portuguese music. The band gained notoriety in the Portuguese music scene and had a sound characterized by poetic lyrics and captivating melodies.

The band Império dos Sendados, of which Rui Rodrigues was the lead singer, played an important role in the Portuguese music scene, especially in the 90s. However, over time, the band went through several changes and an eventual slowdown. In 2001, they released the album “O Último A Sair”, which was well received, but the band’s activity declined in the following years.

The band members followed different paths, with Rui Rodrigues at the time involved in other musical projects and collaborations. The band had some sporadic meetings and performances, but did not return to regular activity.

The band Império dos Sendados has not officially announced a formal “breakup”, but the band went on hiatus and its activity declined over the years. Several factors may have contributed to the band’s slowdown, including changes in member dynamics, evolving personal and professional interests, and the demands of the music market.

Furthermore, the music scene in Portugal has also undergone transformations, with the emergence of new trends and styles. Therefore, many bands, including Império dos Sendados, sometimes face difficulties in staying active.

Conclusion

The Império dos Sentados is a reminder that music has the power to unite, question and provoke. Even though it is a creation of the imagination, its essence lives in every chord, in every lyric and in every note of all the bands that dare to be the voice of their generation, reflecting emotions and realities that, at times, may seem difficult to bear but which, deep down, are what make us human.

In 2003 Rui Rodrigues, aged 38, died at Santa Maria Hospital, where he was hospitalized after undergoing heart transplant surgery around three months. This was later one of the reasons why the band broke up.
