Vodka Laranja

Nuno Magalhães and João Cabeleira studied at the Rainha Dona Leonor High School in Alvalade and frequented the same cafés, such as Sul América and Vává. The two joined forces with Tá (bassist), Paulo (vocalist) and Orlando (guitar) to form Etos, a band that only did covers.

Vodka Laranja appeared after the end of Etos. The initial line-up included Marco Sousa Santos (vocals), João Cabeleira (guitar), Jaimito (bass) and Nuno (drums). The band rehearsed at the famous Senófila. For a brief period of time, Nuno collaborated with Minas e Armadilhas. On 12 October 1979, Vodka Laranja performed at Alunos de Polo with Minas e Armadilhas and Corpo Diplomático. At this concert, João Cabeleira played with Minas e Armadilhas.

Then keyboardist Pedro Queirós joined the band, but stayed for a short time. The rehearsal space changed to João Cabeleira’s room. In the meantime, Marco Sousa Santos left and Gimba took his place. During this period, the group changed rehearsal space several times. While Nuno was in the army, recruiting, they had another drummer, João, and even Ramalho (Street Kids) played with the group.

The single “O Papel” was released by Edisom and distributed by Polygram. The A-side was written by the group and the B-side featured “Terra de Ninguém” with lyrics by Nuno and music by João. After the release of the album, they played several concerts. That year, they played two or three times at “Rock Rendez-vous” and played a few times with Salada de Frutas (a group from the same label).

They also took part in “Passeio dos Alegres” broadcast live from the Monte Gordo casino and performed at that year’s Festa do Avante. Saxophonist Gui (ex-On Off, ex-Casino Twist) joined the band in 1982, shortly after the Vilar de Mouros Festival. Gimba left the group. In December 1983, the group members decided to end the group. Soon after, João Cabeleira was invited to join Xutos & Pontapés.
