Augusto de Oliveira Gonçalves, popularly known as Augusto Canário, is one of the most iconic and beloved figures in Portuguese popular and traditional music. Born on April 7, 1960, in the parish of Vila Nova de Anha, in Viana do Castelo, he has carried the nickname “Canário” (Canary) since an early age, inherited from his father’s side of the family. It was in the heart of the Minho region, surrounded by the traditions of folklore and Minho songbooks, that he shaped his artistic identity and his unconditional love for the concertina (button accordion), the cavaquinho, and the art of improvisation.
His musical journey began through direct contact with regional singers and players, but gained true national prominence with the creation of the project Augusto Canário & Amigos. The group quickly became a staple and an indispensable presence at the largest street festivals, pilgrimages, and traditional gatherings from the north to the south of the country, as well as on stages across the Portuguese diaspora, bringing the joy of Minho to communities spread across Europe, South America, and North America.
Augusto Canário’s main distinguishing factor is his mastery of Cantar ao Desafio (traditional improvisational vocal duels, or desgarradas). With an extraordinary gift for quick thinking, instantaneous rhyming, and a sharp, playful sense of humor—without ever losing respect for his audience—Canário transformed the rhymed duel into a true art of entertainment. His desgarradas, often accompanied by renowned players and singers, are guaranteed moments of laughter and a celebration of popular culture.
Throughout his recording career, Augusto Canário has released dozens of successful albums that have become anthems of Portuguese festivities. Vibrant tracks like “O Povo Canta na Rua”, “A Concertina do Canário”, “O Dançar do Vira”, and his famous compilations of improvisational singing duels continue to garner millions of views and streams across digital platforms and Portuguese music radio stations. His sound is built on the seamless fusion of the infectious energy of the vira and fandango folk dances with festive arrangements that invite everyone to dance.
Beyond his success on stage and in the studio, Augusto Canário’s life is deeply marked by a strong social and humanitarian calling. For years, he worked as a sociocultural animator at the APPSDM (Portuguese Association of Parents and Friends of the Mentally Handicapped Child) in Viana do Castelo, using music, rhythm, and social interaction as tools for inclusion, development, and well-being for people with special needs.
His unique contribution to the preservation and dissemination of Minho’s intangible cultural heritage was publicly recognized in 2017, when the Viana do Castelo City Council honored him with the Medal of Merit. Today, Augusto Canário remains unstoppable in his artistic endeavors, keeping the flame of traditional music alive, packing venues, and proving that simplicity, humor, and the concertina remain the beating heart of Portugal’s festive identity.
