Bastardos do Cardeal

Bastardos do Cardeal, originally from Viseu and formed in 1982, began their journey with Vítor on drums, Vaz Pato on bass and vocals, and José Pedro Athayde on guitar. Soon after, still in Viseu, José Valor joined the band, replacing José Pedro Athayde, who left to create Dead Dream Factory. Valor brought with him an old Portuguese guitar, which he didn’t know how to play, but which was essential for the project, bringing a new sound that helped the band find its identity, leaving a phase of musical adolescence that was lasting.

However, José Valor left the band amid conflicts, and later formed the Ruído Branco Research Center, in addition to participating in Lucretia Divina and, later, Major Alvega. In 1985, Morgadinho joined the group, which performed in Aveiro during the Agitarte Festival in the same year. In 1986, a new guitarist, Duarte, briefly joined Bastardos, performing only in one show at Rock Rendez Vous.

At that time, the band contributed to the compilation album “Divergências” with the captivating track “Aranha”, which featured Vaz Pato, Zé Valor, Vitor and Morgadinho. As Morgadinho hadn’t rehearsed, he limited himself to playing balloons, while Vaz Pato took over the vocals. The group was constantly evolving and, after a turbulent period that culminated in the departure of José Valor, two new guitarists, João Pratts and Alfredo, joined. However, João had a very brief stint, participating in only two or three rehearsals.

José Valor returned to the band in September 1988. In 1989, Bastardos participated in the celebrations of the 9th Anniversary of Rock Rendez Vous. It is worth mentioning that, at the time, they were the Portuguese band with the largest geographical coverage, rehearsing in three different cities: initially in Viseu, then in Coimbra and, finally, in Lisbon, whenever the budget allowed the rental of spaces and the transport of members who were in Beira (Vaz Pato and Vitor).
