Linha Da Frente (Front Line)

Linha da Frente was a Portuguese music project that started in 1999, bringing together 14 musicians from various musical backgrounds to experiment and create music. The project was born as a way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution (April 25th) and aimed to interpret poems by renowned Portuguese authors, such as Fernando Pessoa and Natália Correia, in a musical style that navigated through pop, traditional music, electronic, hip-hop, and dub. This eclectic approach allowed Linha da Frente to create a unique and innovative sound that reflected the cultural and musical diversity of Portugal.

The group, led by Vitor Fernandes, made its live debut in the Praça do Comércio in Lisbon, in a show called “Rock & Revolução”. This performance was an important milestone for the project, as it allowed the musicians to get to know each other better and discover affinities between them. After this performance, some of the musicians decided to create something more concrete and solidified, which led to a natural evolution of the project.

Linha da Frente was composed of a group of talented musicians, including João Aguardela (Sitiados, Megafone, later Naifa), Luís Varatojo (Despe & Siga, later also Naifa), Viviane (Entre Aspas), Dora Fidalgo (Delfins), Janelo da Costa (Kussondulola), Emanuel Ramalho (drums, Delfins), Nuno Rafael (guitar, Despe e Siga), Miguel Martins (bass, Delfins), Rui Duarte (Ramp), Jaime Oliveira (keyboards), Castora (percussion, Delfins), João Marques, Jorge Oliveira, and Cabrita (all from Despe e Siga). This diversity of origins and musical styles allowed Linha da Frente to create a rich and varied sound.

The project evolved beyond covers and started to include original compositions. This allowed the musicians to express their own ideas and visions, creating an original and innovative repertoire. Linha da Frente released a single album, titled “Linha da Frente”, before ending its activities in 2002. This album is a testament to the creativity and talent of the musicians involved in the project.

Linha da Frente was considered the genesis of the band A Naifa, which would later be formed by some of the same musicians. This is not surprising, as Linha da Frente was a project that allowed the musicians to get to know each other better and develop a creative chemistry. A Naifa would go on to explore Portuguese music and create a unique and innovative sound.
