Rui Bandeira
Rui Pedro Neto de Melo Bandeira, better known as Rui Bandeira (Nampula, Mozambique, 25 July 1973), is a Portuguese singer.
Biography
Rui Bandeira was born in the Portuguese colonial territory of Mozambique, in Nampula, on July 25, 1973. He came to Portugal at the age of 2.
He took his first steps in music by learning to play keyboards at a music school in Odivelas, barely eight years old. Around 15, he joined the Maná Church and began composing his first songs within the church. In the following 10 years, until 1997, four albums were released, two by a band of which he was a founder and the last two already in a solo career.
He meets Jorge do Carmo, with whom he begins working on a new, more ambitious album. They send several songs to the RTP da Canção Festival.
In 1999, he won the 36th Festival RTP da Canção, with the theme “How everything began”, produced by Jorge do Carmo. He represents Portugal in the Eurovision Song Contest that same year, held in Jerusalem, Israel.
His first nationally recognized album is the album Como tudo began, which was released in March 1999 by Vidisco.
That year he also represented Portugal, at the invitation of RTP, at the Cairo International Festival, in Egypt, where he came in 4th place among 32 countries, with his interpretation of “Make this World”, by Jorge do Carmo and Tó Andrade, guaranteed the best position among European countries.
The album “Mais” was released in 2000. “Mais (Eu Te Dou)”, which has lyrics by João Baião, was the first single. In 2001, he released the album “Magia do Amor”, which includes a duet with Tiago.
In 2003, he participated in the television program Academia dos Famosos, on TVI, and released the collection Momentos, with 5 new songs and 10 songs from his first works.
The album “Destino” was released in 2004. The album sold more than 10,000 units and Bandeira received the Silver Record award for the first time. This work includes a duet with Portuguese tenor Carlos Guilherme.
The year 2005 is marked by what would be the last album on the Vidisco label: Duas Vidas. In 2006 he switched to Espacial publishing and returned to work with Jorge do Carmo. The result was the album Só Deus Sabe.
Also in 2006, the recording of his first DVD took place in the land that saw Rui Bandeira born into music (Corroios, in Seixal), which would be released the following year. The Live DVD is based on songs from the album Só Deus Sabe and also includes three songs from other albums. Thus, in 2007, the album Ao Vivo was released.
In April 2009, the album O Nosso Amor (album by Rui Bandeira) was released. From this album, the songs “God blessed our love”, “I’m leaving but I’m going happy” and the ballads “Sei que não vai forget” and “Forget what happened” stand out.
In 2010, the album “Um dia você vai volta” was released. In 2011, he released the live album “Coliseu”. In 2010, he released a double album with a DVD of the show held at the Coliseu do Porto. In 2012, the album “Chegou a Hora” was released. The album “Always thinking about you” follows in 2013.
