Today we made a selection of Indie songs from one of the playlists we found on YouTube from mid-2021 and we are going to explain what “Indie” truly means.
Indie music, short for “independent”, refers to music produced independently of major record labels. This means that artists often finance, record and distribute their own music, or work with smaller, independent record labels that give them greater creative control.
It is important to emphasize that “indie” is not a specific musical genre, but rather a form of production and distribution. An artist can be classified as “indie” and still make music in a style that resembles other genres.
Common characteristics of indie music:
- Creative independence: Indie artists have greater freedom to experiment with different musical styles and artistic approaches.
- Diversity of styles: Indie music encompasses a wide range of genres, including rock, pop, folk, electronica, and many others.
- DIY Production: Many indie artists start out recording their music at home or in small studios on a limited budget.
- Focus on authenticity: Indie music often prioritizes personal expression and emotional connection with audiences over following commercial trends.
- Community and culture: The indie scene often involves a strong culture of support between artists and fans, with shows at smaller venues and independent festivals.
