Buraka Som Sistema

Buraka Som Sistema was a Portuguese band, with Portuguese and Angolan members, whose sound is part of the musical genre Kuduro; His first big hit was with the song “Yah!”, in 2006, with the participation of Petty, followed by another hit with “Wawaba”. They were one of the Portuguese musical projects with the most international projection in the 2000s and 2010s.

History

In 2006, Kalaf Ângelo Epalanga, João Barbosa (Branko) and Rui Pité (Riot) formed the 1-Uik Project when they heard songs by the Conjunto Ngonguenha de Condutor (Andro del Pozo) and Luaty Beirão. Kalaf decided to contact Conductor and invited him to join his group, thus starting the Buraka Som Sistema.

In 2008, Buraka Som Sistema released the song “Sound of Kuduro”. It features the participation of M.I.A, DJ Znobia, Saborosa and Puto Prata, being the first single from the album Black Diamond, which was released in the summer of 2008. To be edited by Enchufada, in partnership with Sony BMG, it is the first album by Buraka Som Sistema, which follows the popular EP From Buraka to the World, from 2006, which introduced the group’s kuduro.

After Petty and Pongo Love (the only vocalists to participate in the band’s projects), Blaya joined Buraka Som Sistema, initially as a dancer. In October 2011, the group released their 2nd album, Komba. The album’s first single was “Hangover (Bababa)”.

In 2014, the band released their third album, Buraka. Buraka Som Sistema gave their last concert on July 1, 2016, in Lisbon, and have been on hiatus since then.

Name origin

Although they do not live in Buraca, it is in that parish in the municipality of Amadora, on the outskirts of Lisbon, that the quartet was inspired to name the group and based on the “celebration of diversity, of the different nationalities that speak Portuguese”, as Branko explains in a interview with the weekly O Novo.

Band Members

Its members were Branko, Riot, Kalaf, Conductor and Blaya.
