Born in 2001 in Pinhal Novo as direct descendants of Black Bombay, Ervas Daninhas emerged as a project fueled by the collective history of its founders. The original lineup featured Gil, Miguel, João, and Tiago—musicians who brought experience from previous underground projects like The Afterlife and Anti-Risco. In those early days, the vibe was all about loud, clunky punk rock with a clear humorous streak, resulting in a series of home-recorded CD-Rs that would eventually be compiled into a complete DIY collection of their raw material.

While the band cited legendary influences like the Ramones, Disorder, and Ratos de Porão, their true spirit felt much closer to the heart of Portuguese punk icons like Mata Ratos or Peste & Sida. Over time, however, a shift occurred: the band began to take themselves more seriously. This “growing up” moment wasn’t just visible in their photos; it was audible in their lyrics and the tangible technical evolution of the musicians themselves, marking a turning point where the music gained a sharper, more intentional edge.

The journey wasn’t without its hardships. By late 2002, the group was forced to continue as a trio following the departure of Miguel and the tragic passing of their drummer, Tiago. It wasn’t until 2008 that the ranks swelled again, with Miguel returning and new blood like Augusto joining the fold. Throughout these transformations, Ervas Daninhas stayed true to a hard-hitting punk sound, using their platform to tackle heavy themes like social satire, anti-war sentiments, ecology, and even pro-rurality.

With a legacy that includes four demos, numerous compilations, and three fanzines, the band has certainly left its mark on the scene. Having played around 150 shows and given dozens of interviews, they’ve seen many faces come and go through the years. In their most recent incarnation, the torch was carried by Gil on vocals, Miguel and João on guitars, Bidgi on bass, and Mendonça on drums, keeping the spirit of Pinhal Novo punk alive and kicking.
