Zyrkus Maximus

Originally from Azambuja, Zirkus Maximus was a project that appeared and disappeared in the blink of an eye, which was truly regrettable as they were creators of a complex and danceable sound that, at the time they emerged, no one else was practicing with their competence and vigor.

For those who lived through that time, you could certainly see them in a promo clip for “M.A.D.” which aired multiple times on the television program Pop-Off.

There was a hangover from an era of British dance-based pop-rock music and bands like EMF or Jesus Jones. And these seemed to have found, tailored to their needs, successors in Portugal. They participated in the 1st Lisbon Music Competition sponsored by the city’s City Council, where they were unfairly excluded from the final, and in the 1st Braga Modern Music Competition, where they made a very good impression.

They contributed one song, “Jean et Luc”, to MTM’s “Kaleidoscopic Distortion” compilation and then stopped showing any signs of life. The band consisted of Sónia (vocals), Marco (guitar, vocals) and two other members whose names are unknown.
