Maria de Lourdes de Almeida Lemos, universally known by her stage name Milú (1926–2008), remains one of the most charismatic and iconic figures of 20th-century Portuguese popular culture. As an actress and singer of multifaceted talent, she stood out for her striking stage presence and a crystal-clear voice that captivated generations.
Early Career and Radio
Born in Lisbon on April 24, 1926, Milú’s artistic vocation revealed itself early. At just ten years old, she began performing as a singer on radio broadcasts for stations such as Rádio Graça and Rádio Sonora. Her work at Emissora Nacional consolidated her reputation, where she shone both as a soloist and in prominent vocal ensembles.
Stardom in the Golden Age of Cinema
Despite her success on the radio, it was through the silver screen that Milú became a true phenomenon of popularity. Her film debut took place in 1938, but her absolute breakthrough arrived in 1943 with the classic comedy O Costa do Castelo, where she played the character Luisinha.
Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, she joined the cast of the most memorable productions of the “Golden Age” of Portuguese cinema, including:
- O Leão da Estrela (1947) – in the role of Jujú
- Barrio (1947)
- A Volta de José do Telhado (1949)
- O Grande Elias (1950)
- Os Três da Vida Airada (1952)
Her versatility also allowed her to build a solid career in revue theater (teatro de revista) and work in international productions in Spain, Brazil, and Argentina. Later, in the 1980s, she returned to cinema with the film Kilas, o Mau da Fita (1981), directed by José Fonseca e Costa.
Public Recognition
In May 2007, the Portuguese State formally recognized her contribution to the performing arts by awarding her the Commendation of the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword, presented by the President of the Republic. Milú passed away on November 5, 2008, in Cascais, leaving an indelible legacy in the country’s cultural memory.

Milú’s musical performances are tightly linked to the major film and revue hits of the era, becoming true classics of the Portuguese repertoire:
