Ava Inferi

Ava Inferi is another name from the Portuguese scene that achieved a certain prominence worldwide, but unfortunately, they ended their activities in 2013.

Despite the considerable short time of activity (8 years between 2005 and 2013), the band managed to be quite productive during this period, having released four albums. Where in them, a darker sound was presented, having lines of Doom Metal with Gothic metal, with the female vocals of Carmen Susana Simões in front.

For the most part, the bands’ songs were sung in English, but they also used to risk doing some in their native language, such as the track “A Dança das Ondas”, present on the album “The Silhouette”, from 2007.

The group was formed in 2005 by Norwegian musician Rune “Blasphemer” Eriksen (ex-Mayhem, Aura Noir) and his future wife and singer Carmen Susana Simões (ex-Aenima). After joining Jaime Ferreira on bass and João Samora on drums in the same year, the band started working on a debut album. It will be released in January 2006 as Burden on the Season of Mist label, and diverges from the black metal Eriksen used to play; the album is moving more towards doom metal and the singer’s soul singing, heavily inspired by fado.

Portuguese gothic metal band Moonspell were so impressed with the singer that they tried to recruit him in spring 2007 for a re-recording of the album Under Satanæ. They were also considering recruiting him for the Night Eternal album, she was a guest singer in use. In October 2007 he released his second album, The Silhouette, stylistically very close to the first album and characterized by dark and elegiac music.

In April 2008, Eriksen finally left Mayhem to focus on Ava Inferi and moved to Portugal. Mayhem ‘s difficult and negative farewell led to the recording of the Blood of Bacchus album in May 2009 . For one track on the album, he brought in an acquaintance, Kristoffer “Garm” Rygg of Norwegian band Ulver. Although the group rarely performs live, they do perform at major festivals such as Hellfest 2008 or Wave-Gotik-Treffen 2009. In February and March 2009 they also perform with Tiamat and The 69 Eyes on the Hellhounds Festival Tour.

In May 2013, the group announced their disbandment. In April 2014, the group released the track Ao Teu Lado, taken from the album One and All, Together, For Home, released on May 23, 2013 by Season of Mist.
