From Early Talent to International Stages: April Ivy’s Rise in Portuguese Pop Music

Portuguese singer, songwriter, and actress Mariana Barreiros dos Santos Gonçalves, professionally known as April Ivy, has established herself as one of the prominent figures of the new wave of pop music in Portugal. Born in Lisbon on July 10, 1999, her artistic interests emerged early on. Educated in a British school environment with studies dedicated to piano and vocals, the artist took her first steps in the performing arts at age nine, dubbing characters for various Disney productions and joining youth musical groups as a lead singer and guitarist.

The turning point in April Ivy’s career occurred during her adolescence, driven by an active presence in content creation and publishing covers on digital platforms. At 14, as part of a school internship at Grupo Renascença Multimédia, her vocal talent caught the attention of managers at the Mega Hits radio station. This initial contact with the radio industry opened doors toward establishing a professional career focused on songwriting and music production in both national and international pop markets.

Her formal debut in the recording industry came at age 16 as an independent artist with the release of her self-penned single, “Be Ok.” The track swiftly reached the top of streaming and download charts in Portugal, securing heavy rotation on national radio and featuring on the soundtrack of television drama series. The single’s success led to a performance at the MEO Sudoeste Festival and culminated in 2016 with an international record deal with Universal Music France, making her the first Portuguese artist to achieve this milestone at such a young age.

Industry recognition was further cemented that same year with a nomination for Best Portuguese Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards. In 2017, April Ivy gained additional visibility with a nomination for Newcomer of the Year at the SIC Golden Globes, winning the Newcomer Award at the Rádio Nova Era Awards and receiving a star on the Nirvana Studios Wall of Fame. A steady stream of single releases paved the way for her debut studio album, “game.of.love,” released in 2019 under Warner Music Portugal.

Throughout her artistic evolution, April Ivy has sought to diversify her repertoire and explore new approaches within contemporary pop. Her songwriting capabilities prompted public broadcaster Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP) to invite her as a composer for the iconic Festival da Canção in 2023, where she performed the song “Modo Voo.” Alongside this, the artist expanded her collaborations and released singles that marked a stylistic transition and a progressive vocal maturity in her professional trajectory.

Her international trajectory gained fresh momentum after signing with agency Sons em Trânsito and U.S. record label Beverly Martel under the guidance of producer Sandy Roberton. This strategic chapter enabled collaborations with notable international production teams, leading to the release of singles tailored for global audiences that blended electronic pop influences with intimate, radio-friendly songwriting.
