Practitioners of melodic, noisy and dissonant pop-rock, with a desire to take sonic paths, Blue Oranje Juice was formed in 1996 in Guimarães and was composed of António José Guedes (vocals, guitar, synthesizer), Rodrigo Areias (guitar, vocals), Ricardo “Formiga” (bass, also a member of Cio Soon) and Eduardo (drums).
The band was formed through the dissolution of other, more incipient projects in which its members had been involved (Bergen-Belsen, for example). The first song they composed was “Star”, which reached the ears of Marco Martins, the person responsible for the Garagem record label, who liked it and wanted to release it.
They played a kind of sonic pop and hypnotic rock in the style of what was fashionable at the time, assuming themselves as indefatigable followers of the inevitable Sonic Youth, Pavement, Pixies or Dinosaur Jr. It was with this line up that the band recorded the song “Star”.
The project ended up achieving a certain status among the range of independent bands that were emerging at the time. Just like their idols, they intended not only to make songs but also to deconstruct music in a pop format, using a melody that they sought to transform through noise into something more abstract. In “Monoxide”, the only long-playing album they released (which was to be called “Happy Orange Party”), they had the collaboration of jazz saxophonist Rui Azul, with production being the responsibility of Joe Fossard.
Unfortunatly we haven’t found any other songs or info about this band.
