“Rock In Portugal” Magazine
The magazine “Rock em Portugal” was the only publication that dedicated itself to the phenomenon of Portuguese rock before the “boom” that took place in the 80s of the 20th century.
It began publishing in January 1978, priced at 15$00 and with a circulation of 10,000 copies. Its director was António José, a former musician from the group FBI and, at the time, owner of a rock band performance agency.
The editor-in-chief was the journalist António Duarte, who would be the author of the book “A Arte Eléctrica De Ser Português – 25 Anos De Rock’N’Portugal”, published in the early 80s and now completely out of print.
António Duarte would later be the mentor of the musical project DW Art, which performed live several times at Rock Rendez Vous. The magazine had an A5 format and poor quality paper. The interviews focused on names such as Os Plutónicos, Arte & Ofício, Tantra, Os Faíscas, Aqui D’El Rock, Ananga Ranga, Hosanna, Perspectiva, José Cid, Pesquisa, António Victorino de Almeida, etc.
The magazine had several collaborators throughout its existence: António Sérgio, Hermínio Clemente, João Filipe Barbosa, Miguel Monteiro (who published a comic strip about a “Rocker” entitled “Quico”) or Picâpe Roque.
In addition to his participation, there was also the collaboration of readers who sent their chronicles about concerts they had attended.
Due to the lack of support, the magazine did not come out with the monthly frequency initially planned and began to delay its publication. In the final part of its existence, the magazine began to have fewer pages and fewer sections and due to the crisis that hit it, it ended its edition in May 1979, at number 11.
